ബിഷപ് മാർ റാഫേൽ തട്ടിൽ സീറോമലബാർസഭയുടെ വലിയ ഇടയൻ
സീറോമലബാർസഭയുടെ നാലാമത്തെ മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പായി ഷംഷാബാദ് രൂപതയുടെ മെത്രാൻ അഭിവന്ദ്യ മാർ റാഫേൽ തട്ടിൽ പിതാവിനെ സീറോമലബാർസഭയുടെ മെത്രാൻസിനഡു തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു. 2023 ഡിസംബർ 7-ാം തിയതി പരിശുദ്ധ പിതാവ് ഫ്രാൻസിസ് മാർപാപ്പ അഭിവന്ദ്യ കർദിനാൾ മാർ ജോർജ് ആലഞ്ചേരി പിതാവിന്റെ രാജി സ്വീകരിച്ചതോടെയാണു പുതിയ മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പിനെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കേണ്ട സാഹചര്യം രൂപപ്പെട്ടത്. സഭയുടെ അഡ്മിനിസ്ട്രേറ്റർ മാർ സെബാസ്റ്റ്യൻ വാണിയപ്പുരയ്ക്കൽ പിതാവു മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പിനെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള കാനോനിക ക്രമീകരണങ്ങൾ ചെയ്തു. പുതിയ മേജർആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പിന്റെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പു വാർത്ത വത്തിക്കാനിലും സീറോമലബാർസഭയുടെ കേന്ദ്രകാര്യാലയത്തിലും ഒരേ സമയം അറിയിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി.
2024 ജനുവരി 8-നു ആരംഭിച്ച മുപ്പത്തിരണ്ടാമതു മെത്രാൻസിനഡിന്റെ ഒന്നാം സമ്മേളനമാണ് രണ്ടാമത്തെ ദിവസം നടത്തിയ വോട്ടെടുപ്പിലൂടെ പുതിയ മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പിനെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത്. കാനോനിക നടപടികൾ പൂർത്തിയാക്കി മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പിനെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത വിവരം പരിശുദ്ധ പിതാവിനെ അറിയിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു സിനഡിൽ പങ്കെടുത്ത പിതാക്കന്മാരെല്ലാം ഒപ്പുവെച്ച കത്തും തന്റെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിന് അംഗീകാരം നല്കണമെന്ന് അഭ്യർഥിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് സ്വന്തം കൈപ്പടയിൽ നിയുക്ത മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ് എഴുതിയ കത്തും അപ്പസ്തോലിക് നുൻഷ്യേച്ചർവഴി മാർപാപ്പയ്ക്കു സമർപ്പിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. 2024 ജനുവരി 10നു മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പിന്റെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിന് അംഗീകാരം നല്കികൊണ്ടുള്ള കത്തു ലഭിച്ചതിനെത്തുടർന്നു നിയുക്ത മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ് സിനഡിനുമുൻപിൽ വിശ്വാസപ്രഖ്യാപനവും മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പിന്റെ ഉത്തരവാദിത്വങ്ങൾ വിശ്വസ്തതയോടെ നിർവഹിക്കുമെന്നുള്ള പ്രതിജ്ഞയും നടത്തി. തുടർന്നു സിനഡിന്റെ ഇലക്ഷൻ സമ്മേളനം സമാപിക്കുകയും മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പിന്റെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പു പ്രഖ്യാപനം നടത്തുന്നതിനു പിതാക്കന്മാർ ഓഡിറ്റോറിയത്തിലേക്കു പോകുകയുംചെയ്തു.
2024 ജനുവരി 10-ാം തിയതി ബുധനാഴ്ച വൈകുന്നേരം 4.30നു സഭയുടെ കേന്ദ്ര കാര്യാലയത്തിലെ സെന്റ് തോമസ് ഓഡിറ്റോറിയത്തിൽ നടന്ന ചടങ്ങിൽ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പു സിനഡു സമ്മേളനത്തിൽ അധ്യക്ഷനായിരുന്ന ആർച്ചുബിഷപ് മാർ മാത്യു മൂലക്കാട്ട് പുതിയ മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പിന്റെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പു വിവരം പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് പുതിയ മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പിനെ സഭയുടെ അഡ്മിനിസ്ട്രേറ്റർ മാർ സെബാസ്റ്റ്യൻ വാണിയപ്പുരയ്ക്കൽ പിതാവും സിനഡു സെക്രട്ടറി ആർച്ചുബിഷപ് മാർ ജോസഫ് പാംപ്ലാനി പിതാവുംചേർന്ന് ഓഡിറ്റോറിയത്തിലേക്കു ആനയിച്ചു. പുതിയ മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പിന് അഡ്മിനിസ്ട്രേറ്റർ മാർ സെബാസ്റ്റ്യൻ വാണിയപ്പുരയ്ക്കൽ പിതാവു ബൊക്കെ നല്കി ആശംസകൾ അർപ്പിച്ചു. മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ് എമിരറ്റസ് കർദിനാൾ മാർ ജോർജ് ആലഞ്ചേരി പിതാവ് ആശംസകളർപ്പിച്ചു സംസാരിച്ചു. തന്റെ മറുപടി പ്രസംഗത്തിൽ മാർ റാഫേൽ തട്ടിൽ പിതാവു ദൈവത്തിനും സിനഡുപിതാക്കന്മാർക്കും കൃതജ്ഞതയർപ്പിച്ചു. തുടർന്നു മെത്രന്മാരെല്ലാവരും പുതിയ മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പിനോടു വിധേയത്വവും സഹകരണവും സ്നേഹവും പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ആശംസകളർപ്പിച്ചു.
തൃശ്ശൂർ അതിരൂപതയിലെ വ്യാകുലമാതാവിന്റെ ബസിലിക്ക ഇടവകയിൽ തട്ടിൽ ഔസേപ്പ്-ത്രേസ്യ ദമ്പതികളുടെ പത്തുമക്കളിൽ ഇളയവനായി 1956 ഏപ്രിൽ 21നു ജനിച്ചു. സ്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിനുശേഷം തൃശ്ശൂർ അതിരൂപതയുടെ തോപ്പ് സെന്റ് മേരീസ് മൈനർ സെമിനാരിയിൽ വൈദികപരിശീലനത്തിനായി ചേർന്നു. വടവാതൂർ സെന്റ് തോമസ് അപ്പസ്തോലിക് സെമിനാരിയിൽനിന്നു തത്വശാസ്ത്രദൈവശാസ്ത്ര പരിശീലനം പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ അദ്ദേഹം 1980 ഡിസംബർ 21നു മാർ ജോസഫ് കുണ്ടുകുളം പിതാവിൽനിന്നു പൗരോഹിത്യം സ്വീകരിച്ചു. പൗരോഹിത്യസ്വീകരണത്തിനുശേഷം അരണാട്ടുകര സെന്റ് തോമസ് പള്ളിയിൽ അസിസ്റ്റന്റ് വികാരി, മൈനർ സെമിനാരിയിൽ ഫാദർ പ്രീഫെക്ട് അസിസ്റ്റന്റ് പ്രൊക്കുറേറ്റർ എന്നീ നിലകളിൽ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ച ബഹു. തട്ടിലച്ചൻ ഉപരിപഠനത്തിനായി റോമിലേക്കു പോയി. റോമിലെ പൊന്തിഫിക്കൽ ഓറിയന്റൽ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിൽനിന്നു കാനൻനിയമത്തിൽ ഡോക്ടറേറ്റു നേടി. റോമിലെ ഉപരിപഠനത്തിനുശേഷം തിരിച്ചെത്തിയ അദ്ദേഹം തൃശ്ശൂർ അതിരൂപതയിൽ വൈസ് ചാൻസലർ, ചാൻസലർ, ജുഡീഷ്യൽ വികാരി, ജഡ്ജി, സിഞ്ചെല്ലൂസ്, പ്രോട്ടോസിഞ്ചെല്ലൂസ്, ഡി. ബി. സി. എൽ. സി. യുടെയും വിശ്വാസപരിശീലന വിഭാഗത്തിന്റെയും ഡയറക്ടർ, തൃശ്ശൂർ മേരിമാതാ സെമിനാരിയുടെ പ്രഥമ റെക്ടർ എന്നീ നിലകളിൽ പ്രശംസനീയമായ സേവനം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു.
2010 ഏപ്രിൽ 10നു തൃശ്ശൂർ അതിരൂപതയുടെ സഹായമെത്രാനായും ബ്രൂണി രൂപതയുടെ സ്ഥാനികമെത്രാനുമായി ഫാ. റാഫേൽ തട്ടിൽ നിയമിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. 2014-ൽ സീറോമലബാർ സഭയുടെ അധികാരപരിധിക്കുപുറത്തുള്ള വിശ്വാസികളുടെ അപ്പസ്തോലിക് വിസിറ്റേറ്ററായി നിയമതിനായി. 2017 ഒക്ടോബർ 10നു ഫ്രാൻസിസ് മാർപാപ്പ അഭിവന്ദ്യ തട്ടിൽ പിതാവിനെ ഷംഷാബാദ് രൂപതയുടെ പ്രഥമ മെത്രാനായി നിയമിച്ചു. 2018 ജനുവരി 7നു സ്ഥാനമേറ്റ പിതാവ് ഷംഷാബാദ് രൂപതയുടെ മെത്രാനായി സേവനംചെയ്തു വരവേയാണു സീറോമലബാർസഭയുടെ പിതാവും തലവനുമായി പിതാവിനെ സിനഡ് തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത്. മലയാളം, ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്, ഇറ്റാലിയൻ, ജർമ്മൻ എന്നീ ഭാഷകളിൽ പ്രാവീണ്യമുള്ള വ്യക്തിയാണ് നിയുക്ത മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്.
പുതിയ മേജർ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പിന്റെ സ്ഥാനാരോഹണം 2024 ജനുവരി 11-ാം തിയതി വ്യാഴാഴ്ച ഉച്ചകഴിഞ്ഞു 2.30നു സഭയുടെ കേന്ദ്രകാര്യാലയമായ കാക്കനാട് മൗണ്ട് സെന്റ് തോമസിൽ വച്ചു നടത്തുന്നു. സിനഡുപിതാക്കന്മാരോടൊപ്പം രൂപതകളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള അല്മായ സമർപ്പിത വൈദിക പ്രതിനിധികളും സുപ്പീരിയർ ജനറൽമാരും പ്രത്യേകം ക്ഷണിക്കപ്പെട്ടവരും മാത്രമായിരിക്കും കർമത്തിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നത്. എല്ലാവർക്കും സ്ഥാനാരോഹണചടങ്ങുകൾ വീക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനു ലൈവ് സംപ്രേക്ഷണം ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കുന്നതാണ്.

Bishop Raphael Thattil New Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church
The Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church elected Bishop Raphael Thattil, currently the Bishop of the Eparchy of Shamshabad, the fourth Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church. The need for electing a new Major Archbishop evolved as the Holy Father Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Cardinal George Alencherry from the Office of the Major Archbishop. Bishop Mar Sebastian Vaniyapurackal who assumed the Office of Administrator in the interim period made the canonical arrangements for the election of the new Major Archbishop. The election was formally announced simultaneously at the Vatican and Major Archiepiscopal Curia at Mount St. Thomas Kakkanad.
The Session of the Synod which started on 8 January 2024, having completed the canonical procedures of electing the new Major Archbishop on the second day, sent the Synodal letter addressed to the Holy Father Pope Francis, through the Apostolic Nunciature, signed by all the participants of the Session, together with the letter of the Major Archbishop-elect, in his own handwriting, requesting the confirmation of the Holy Father for his election. Having received the confirmation of the Holy Father, the Major Archbishop-elect made the profession of faith and act of fidelity before the Synod Fathers. Then the election Session of the Synod was concluded and the Synod Fathers proceeded to announcement of the election of the Major Archbishop.
On Wednesday, at 4.30 pm on 10 January 2024, Archbishop Mar Moolakkatt, the president of the Election Session, announced that Bishop Raphael Thattil, currently the Bishop of Shamshabad, is elected the fourth Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church. Then, the new Major Archbishop entered the auditorium accompanied by Bishop Mar Sebastian Vaniyapurackal, the Administrator and Archbishop Joseph Pamplany, the Secretary of the Synod. Bishop Mar Sebastian Vaniyapurackal congratulated the new Major Archbishop by giving a bouquet. Cardinal George Alencherry, the Major Archbishop Emeritus, felicitated the new Major Archbishop. In his words of reply, Bishop Raphael Thattil thanked God for his ineffable grace bestowed on him. He expressed his gratitude to the Holy Father and the Synod of Bishops for having placed the trust in him.
Bishop Raphael Thattil was born on 21 April 1956 as the last child of ten children of Thattil Ouseph and Thresia, hailing from Our lady of Dolours Basilica, in the Archeparchy of Trichur. After his school education, he joined the St. Mary’s Minor Seminary, Trichur in 1971. He completed his studies of Philosophy and Theology from St. Thomas Ap. Seminary Vadavathoor and was ordained a priest on 21 December 1980 by Mar Joseph Kundukulam, in Doloures Basilica, Trichur.
After his ordination Fr. Thattil served as Asst. Vicar, Aranattukara and Fr. Prefect & Asst. Procurator at St Mary’s Minor Seminary, Trichur. The he was sent for higher studies in Rome. Fr. Thattil successfully completed doctorate in Oriental Canon Law. His thesis was on “Clerical Formation in the Syro Malabar Church: A Historico-Juridical Study”. On his return from Rome, Fr. Thattil served in the Eparchy as Vice Chancellor, Chancellor, Adjutant Judicial Vicar, Judge, Syncellus and Proto Syncellus. He also served as the Director of DBCLC & Catechism. He served the Marymatha Major Seminary Trichur as its first Rector.
Fr. Raphael Thattil was consecrated Bishop on 10 April 2010 and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Trichur and Titular Bishop of Bruni. In 2014, he was appointed as Apostolic Visitator for the Syro-Malabar faithful residing outside the territorium proprium. Pope Francis named him the first Bishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Shamshabad on 10 October 2017. Bishop Mar Thattil was installed on 7 January 2018. The new Major Archbishop is fluent in Malayalam, English, German and Italian languages.
The installation of the Major Archbishop will be he held at 2.30 pm on Thursday, 11 January 2024, at the Major Archiepiscopal Curia of the Syro-Malabar Church, Mount St. Thomas, Kakkanad. The installation ceremony will be attended by the Synod Fathers, representatives of the lay faithful and religious from the eparchies, Superior Generals and other specially invited guests only. The installation ceremony and the celebration of the Holy Qurbana will be broadcasted live for everyone to view.
