ആലപ്പുഴ മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിൽ 2021-ൽ ഗർഭപാത്രം നീക്കം ചെയ്ത ഉഷ ജോസഫ് എന്ന വീട്ടമ്മയുടെ വയറ്റിൽ ശസ്ത്രക്രിയയ്ക്ക് ഉപയോഗിച്ച കത്രികതന്നെ നിക്ഷേപിച്ച സംഭവം സമൂഹത്തിൽ വലിയ ആശങ്ക സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നു.
കോഴിക്കോട് മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിൽ സമാന സംഭവം ഉണ്ടായിട്ടും ആരോഗ്യവകുപ്പിൽ ഇത്തരം വീഴ്ചകൾ ആവർത്തിക്കുന്നത് ഗൗരവമായ വീഴ്ചയാണ്.

Medical Negligence Must Not Be Repeated — Patient Safety Must Be Ensured in Government Hospitals

Government hospitals are the primary refuge for ordinary citizens. Repeated incidents where surgical instruments are left inside patients’ bodies cause serious concern and undermine public confidence in the healthcare system.
Similar cases reported from Alappuzha Medical College and Kozhikode Medical College, where patients suffered for years without knowing the cause, raise grave questions about safety standards in healthcare institutions. Such incidents not only affect the health and quality of life of patients but also weaken society’s trust in the public health system.
Just as achievements in the health sector are highlighted, authorities have the responsibility to openly acknowledge lapses and correct them when they occur.
Therefore, the following measures must be implemented urgently:
- Mandatory digital surgical instrument counting and safety protocol
- Establishment of an independent medical safety audit system
- Immediate treatment support and fair compensation for victims of medical negligence
- Strengthening staff training and accountability mechanisms
Ensuring patient safety is the primary duty of the healthcare sector. Trust can be restored not by concealment, but by correction.
