The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception – 8 December

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception celebrates the solemn belief in the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

It is a Solemnity and is universally celebrated on 8 December, nine months before the feast of the Nativity of Mary, which is celebrated on 8 September. It is one of the most important Marian feasts in the liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church, celebrated worldwide.

Today we remember the Conception of St. Anne or the Maternity of Holy Anna, the mother of Holy Mary. We remember how God intervened in the course of human relationships to create the perfect vessel to contain the Word of God — the New Ark of the Covenant. This liturgical commemoration was introduced as a feast in the Byzantine Church, which then became the feast of the Immaculate Conception in the Latin West.
