Kakkanad: Cardinal George Alencherry, the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church expressed his deepest condolences on the demise of Cardinal Telesphore Toppo, the esteemed Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Ranchi and the former President of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI). Cardinal Telesphore Toppo was an epitome of selfless service who toiled for the integral development of the people entrusted to him.
Born at Ranchi in 1939, he was ordained a priest in 1969. After the higher studies in Rome, he became a steadfast advocate for the impoverished and the poor, with their well-being forever at the forefront of his ministry and words. He was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Dumka in 1978. Seven years later, in 1985, he was elevated as the Archbishop of Ranchi. St. John Paul II created him a Cardinal in 2003. As the first Asian tribal Cardinal of the Catholic Church, he stood as a source of pride and inspiration for the socially disadvantaged segments of society.
His humility and simplicity coupled with his social commitment gave him wider acceptance. His administrative acumen shone through in his double election as President of the CCBI and his term as President of the CBCI. He was a great supporter of the communion ecclesiology to be accepted by the CBCI. Amidst these administrative accomplishments, his heart remained steadfastly focused on the plight of the poor and marginalized. He tirelessly advocated for the dissemination of the message of peace and love espoused by Jesus within his surrounding society. It was due to his strenuous effort that the CBCI could start a Medical College in Ranchi.
With his passing, Cardinal Alencherry said, the Church in India bids farewell to a fervent champion of the destitute, an educationist who harmonized progress with education, and a distinguished humanist who reached out to people from all walks of life. His life will ever remain as an inspirational model for all who work for the society. Cardinal Alencherry issued his statement of condolences while participating in the Synod of Bishops currently being held in Rome.

കർദിനാൾ ടോപ്പോ സമർപ്പണത്തിന്റെ ഉദാത്ത മാതൃക: കർദിനാൾ ജോർജ് ആലഞ്ചേരി
കാക്കനാട്: റാഞ്ചി അതിരൂപതയുടെ മുൻ അധ്യക്ഷനും ഭാരത കത്തോലിക്കാ മെത്രാൻ സമിതിയുടെ മുൻ പ്രസിഡണ്ടുമായിരുന്ന കർദിനാൾ ടെലസ്ഫോർ ടോപ്പോയുടെ നിര്യാണത്തിൽ സീറോമലബാർസഭ മേജർ ആർച്ച്ബിഷപ് കർദിനാൾ മാർ ജോർജ് ആലഞ്ചേരി പിതാവ് അനുശോചിച്ചു. തനിക്കു ഭരമേല്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട ജനതയുടെ സമഗ്രമായ വികസനത്തിനുവേണ്ടി കഠിനാധ്വാനം ചെയ്ത ഈ വൈദിക മേലധ്യക്ഷൻ സമർപ്പണത്തിന്റെ ഉദാത്ത മാതൃകയാണെന്ന് കർദിനാൾ തന്റെ അനുശോചനസന്ദേശത്തിൽ പറഞ്ഞു.
റാഞ്ചി അതിരൂപതയിലെ ചെയിൻപൂർ എന്ന പ്രദേശത്ത് 1939ൽ ജനിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം 1969ൽ വൈദികനായി. റോമിലെ ഉപരിപഠനത്തിനുശേഷം രൂപതയിൽ തിരിച്ചെത്തിയ അദ്ദേഹം ഗോത്രജനതയുടെയും ആദിവാസികളുടെയും ക്ഷേമത്തിനുവേണ്ടി വിവിധ പദ്ധതികൾ ആവിഷ്കരിച്ചു നടപ്പാക്കി. 1978ൽ ദുംഗ രൂപതയുടെ മെത്രാനായി നിയമിതനായ അദ്ദേഹം 1985ൽ റാഞ്ചി അതിരൂപതയുടെ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പായി. 2003ൽ വിശുദ്ധ ജോൺ പോൾ രണ്ടാമൻ മാർപാപ്പ കർദിനാൾ സ്ഥാനം നൽകി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്ക് അംഗീകാരം നൽകി. കത്തോലിക്കാസഭയിൽ ഗോത്രവിഭാഗത്തിൽനിന്നുള്ള ആദ്യത്തെ ഏഷ്യക്കാരനായ കർദിനാളാണ് അദ്ദേഹം.
എളിമയും ലാളിത്യവും സാമൂഹ്യപ്രതിബദ്ധതയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രവർത്തങ്ങൾക്ക് സ്വീകാര്യത നേടിക്കൊടുത്തു. റാഞ്ചി ജില്ലയിൽ ഭാരത കത്തോലിക്കാ മെത്രാൻ സമിതിയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ ഒരു മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജ് ആരംഭിക്കാൻ നേതൃത്വമെടുത്തത് കർദിനാൾ ടോപ്പോ ആയിരുന്നു. ആഴമായ വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെയും പ്രാർത്ഥനയുടെയും മാതൃകയായിരുന്ന കർദിനാൾ ടെലസ്ഫോർ ടോപ്പോ പാവപ്പെട്ടവരുടെയും പാർശ്വവൽക്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ടവരുടെയും ഉന്നമനത്തിനുവേണ്ടി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ പൊതുനന്മയ്ക്കുവേണ്ടി അത്യദ്ധ്വാനം ചെയ്ത കർദിനാൾ ടെലസ്ഫോർ ടോപ്പോയുടെ ജീവിതം എല്ലാവർക്കും അനുകരണീയമായ മാതൃകയാണെന്ന് കർദിനാൾ ആലഞ്ചേരി തന്റെ സന്ദേശത്തിൽ പറഞ്ഞു. റോമിൽ നടക്കുന്ന മെത്രാൻ സിനഡിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നതിനിടയിലാണ് കർദിനാൾ ടോപ്പോയുടെ വേർപാടിൽ കർദിനാൾ ആലഞ്ചേരി തന്റെ അനുശോചനമറിയിച്ചത്.
