Bangalore, December 12, 2023 (CCBI): The Synod of Bishops of the Syro Malankara Major Archiepiscopal Church has elected as Bishop of the Eparchy of St. Ephrem of Khadki of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, the Rev. Fr. Mathai Kadavil (60), O.I.C., currently Superior General of the Institute of the Order of the Imitation of Christ, to which the Holy Father Pope Francis has given his assent. This was made public on December 12, 2023.
Fr Mathai Kadavil was born on 21 December 1963 in Kannathunadu, Kerala. Having entered the Order of the Imitation of Christ Institute of the Syro-Malankara Church, he took his first vows on 15 May 1981. He studied Philosophy and Theology at Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth in Pune before receiving priestly ordination on 9 October 1989.
As a priest, he held the office of vice-rector of postulants for a year. From 1990 to 1995, he exercised the ministry in the Archeparchy of Tiruvalla of the Syro-Malankara people as parish priest, as well as diocesan director of youth pastoral care Malankara Catholic Youth Ministry. At the same time, he was responsible for the Bethany publications publishing house of his Religious Institute and the management of the Bethany Book Centre. From 1993 to 1995 he coordinated the Malankara Catholic Youth Ministry.
He then continued his studies at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium), where he obtained a Doctorate in Theology in 2002. Upon returning to his homeland, he worked again in the pre-novitiate for a year. From 2003 to 2006 he was Provincial Councillor with particular attention to the Bombay-Pune Missions. From 2006 to 2009 he was parish priest of two parishes, before becoming Provincial Superior from 2009 to 2015. From 2011 to 2017 he was Secretary of the Theological Commission of the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC). He has been Secretary of the Synodal Commission for Theology of Syro Malankara Catholic Church since 2018. From 2017 to 2020, he held the positions of Professor and resident formator at Malankara Major Seminary, Trivandrum. In 2021 he was elected Superior General of the Order of the Imitation of Christ. He is the author of four books and around 130 articles in English and Malayalam, he also knows Sanskrit, Syriac, German, and French.

മലങ്കര സുറിയാനി കത്തോലിക്കാ സഭയുടെ പൂനാ-കട്കി സെന്‍റ് എഫ്രേം ഭദ്രാസനത്തിന്‍റെ പുതിയ ഇടയനായി, പരിശുദ്ധ ഫ്രാന്‍സിസ് മാര്‍പാപ്പായുടെ അംഗീകാരത്തോടെ, മലങ്കര സുറിയാനി കത്തോലിക്കാസഭയുടെ അദ്ധ്യക്ഷന്‍ കര്‍ദ്ദിനാള്‍ ബസേലിയോസ് ക്ലീമിസ് കാതോലിക്കാ ബാവാ, ബഥനി സന്യാസ സമൂഹത്തിന്‍റെ സുപ്പീരിയര്‍ ജനറല്‍ വെരി റവ. ഡോ. മത്തായി കടവില്‍ ഓ.ഐ.സി. യെ നിയമിച്ചു. ഈ നിയമന പ്രഖ്യാപനം 2023 ഡിസംബര്‍ 12-ന് വത്തിക്കാനിലും ഇന്‍ഡ്യന്‍സമയം വൈകിട്ട് 4.30-ന് പട്ടം സെന്‍റ് മേരീസ് മേജര്‍ ആര്‍ക്കിഎപ്പാര്‍ക്കിയല്‍ കത്തീഡ്രല്‍ ദൈവാലയത്തിലും നടന്നു. പട്ടം കത്തീഡ്രലില്‍ പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനയ്ക്കു ശേഷം നടന്ന ചടങ്ങില്‍ മലങ്കര സുറിയാനി കത്തോലിക്കാ സഭയുടെ പരിശുദ്ധ സുന്നഹദോസ് സെക്രട്ടറി തിരുവല്ലാ ആര്‍ച്ചുബിഷപ്പ് ഡോ. തോമസ് മാര്‍ കൂറിലോസ് മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്താ, മേജര്‍ ആര്‍ച്ചുബിഷപ്പ്-കാതോലിക്കോസിന്‍റെ നിയമന പ്രഖ്യാപനം വായിച്ചു. നിയുക്ത മെത്രാനെ കാതോലിക്കാ ബാവാ കുരിശുമാല അണിയിച്ചു. പൂനാ-കട്കി ഭദ്രാസനത്തിന്‍റെ അഡ്മിനിസ്ട്രേറ്റര്‍ ഡോ. തോമസ് മാര്‍ അന്തോണിയോസ് ഹാരമണിയിച്ചു. ബിഷപ്പുമാരായ യൂഹാനോന്‍ മാര്‍ ക്രിസോസ്റ്റം, ജോഷ്വാ മാര്‍ ഇഗ്നാത്തിയോസ്, സാമുവേല്‍ മാര്‍ ഐറേനിയോസ്, തോമസ് മാര്‍ യൗസേബിയോസ്, യൂഹാനോന്‍ മാര്‍ തെയഡോഷ്യസ്, വിന്‍സെന്‍റ് മാര്‍ പൗലോസ്, ആന്‍റണി മാര്‍ സില്‍വാനോസ്, വൈദികര്‍, സന്യസ്തര്‍, വിശ്വാസികള്‍ തുടങ്ങിയവര്‍ സംബന്ധിച്ചു.

റവ. ഡോ. മത്തായി കടവില്‍ ഓ.ഐ.സി. മൂവാറ്റുപുഴ രൂപതയില്‍ പൂത്തൃക്ക സെന്‍റ് ജയിംസ് മലങ്കര സുറിയാനി കത്തോലിക്കാ ഇടവകയില്‍ കടവില്‍ മത്തായി, അന്നമ്മ ദമ്പതികളുടെ മകനായി 1963 ല്‍ ജനിച്ചു. ഹൈസ്കൂള്‍ പഠനത്തിനുശേഷം 1979-ല്‍ ബഥനി മിശിഹാനുകരണ സന്യാസ ആശ്രമത്തില്‍ പ്രവേശിച്ചു. പൂനാ പേപ്പല്‍ സെമിനാരിയില്‍ നിന്ന് തത്വശാസ്ത്ര ദൈവശാസ്ത്ര പഠനം പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കി 1989 ഒക്ടോബര്‍ 9-നു വൈദീക പട്ടം സ്വീകരിച്ചു. തുടര്‍ന്ന് ലൂവൈനിലെ കത്തോലിക്കാ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയില്‍ നിന്നും ദൈവശാസ്ത്രത്തില്‍ ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദവും ഡോക്ടറേറ്റും കരസ്ഥമാക്കി. ബഥനി സന്യാസ പരിശീലന ശുശ്രൂഷയില്‍ റെക്ടറായും, സെന്‍റ് മേരീസ് മലങ്കര സെമിനാരി പ്രൊഫസറായും ബഥനി പബ്ലിക്കേഷന്‍റെയും മലങ്കര സെമിനാരി പബ്ലിക്കേഷന്‍റെയും ഡയറക്ടാറും എഡിറ്ററായും, വിവിധ ഇടവകകളുടെ വികാരിയായും സേവനം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. മലങ്കര കാത്തലിക് യൂത്ത് മൂവ്മെന്‍റിന്‍റെയും മലങ്കര കാത്തലിക് അസോസിയേഷന്‍റെയും ഭദ്രാസന, സഭാതല ഡയറക്ടറായും ശുശ്രൂഷ ചെയ്ത അദ്ദേഹം അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ദൈവശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനുമാണ്.
