ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽ ഞാൻ സന്ന്യാസ സമൂഹത്തിൽ അംഗമായപ്പോൾ ആദ്യമേ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ ഒരു കാര്യം എല്ലാ അംഗങ്ങളും ഒരുപോലല്ല എന്നും എല്ലാവരും ഒരുപോലെ തീക്ഷ്ണതയുള്ളവരല്ല എന്നുമാണ്. അത് സ്വാഭാവികമാണെന്നും ഉടനെ ഞാൻ മനസ്സിലാക്കി. അക്കാലത്ത് മിക്ക അംഗങ്ങളും അതീവ ലാളിത്യത്തിലും ദാരിദ്ര്യാരൂപിയിലുമാണ് ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ചിലർ അസാധാരണമാംവിധം “ദാരിദ്ര്യാരൂപി” ഉള്ളവരായിരുന്നു. എല്ലായ്പ്പോഴും സന്ന്യാസ വസ്ത്രം ധരിക്കുന്നവരായിരുന്നു അവർ മിക്കവരും. വെറും രണ്ട് ഉടുപ്പും രണ്ട് ജോഡി അടിവസ്ത്രവും ഒരു തോർത്തും കുടയും ഒരു ചെറിയ കുരിശുരൂപവും ഒഴികെ മറ്റൊന്നും മുറിയിൽ ഇല്ലാതിരുന്നവർ! അത്രയും കാർക്കശ്യത്തോടെ ലളിതമായി ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന അവരോടെല്ലാം എന്തെന്നില്ലാത്ത ആദരവും ആരാധനയുമായിരുന്നു എനിക്കന്ന്.
ഒന്നുരണ്ട് വർഷം കൂടി കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോഴാണ് മറ്റൊരു കാര്യം ശ്രദ്ധയിൽ പെട്ടത്. മേല്പറഞ്ഞ തീക്ഷ്ണമതികളും എല്ലാവരും ഒരുപോലെയല്ല. അതും സ്വാഭാവികം മാത്രം.
എല്ലാവരോടും, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ദരിദ്രരോട് പ്രത്യേകമായ അലിവും സ്നേഹവായ്പും ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കുക എന്നത് ക്രൈസ്തവ സന്ന്യാസത്തിലെ ദാരിദ്ര്യ വ്രതത്തിൻ്റെ ഉൾക്കാമ്പാണ്. മേല്പറഞ്ഞവരിൽ പലരും വ്യക്തിപരമായി അതീവ ദരിദ്രവും ലളിതവുമായ ജീവിതം കഴിക്കുമ്പോഴും പാവങ്ങളോട് കാർക്കശ്യത്തോടെ പെരുമാറുന്നതായി ഞാൻ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ, ചിലർ നേരേ തിരിച്ച് സാധാരണക്കാരോടും പാവങ്ങളോടും വലിയ മനസ്സലിവുള്ളവരും ആയിരുന്നു. അക്കാരണത്താൽ ചുരുക്കമായിട്ടെങ്കിലും സന്ന്യാസ സമൂഹാംഗങ്ങളുടെ അനിഷ്ടത്തിന് അവർ പാത്രീഭൂതരാകുന്നതും, അപ്പോഴും അവർ തങ്ങളുടെ സഹാനുഭൂതി കേടാകാതെ സൂക്ഷിക്കുന്നതും കണ്ടു. അവരെ വിശുദ്ധ ജന്മങ്ങൾ എന്നുതന്നെ ഞാൻ വിളിക്കും.
സഭാഗാത്രത്തിലും സമാനമായ രീതികൾ കാണാനുണ്ട്. സഭയുടെ പാരമ്പര്യങ്ങളും കീഴ്‌വഴക്കങ്ങളും കർക്കശമായി പാലിക്കുന്ന പലരും സ്നേഹത്തിൻ്റെയും സഹാനുഭൂതിയുടെയും മറ്റും കാര്യത്തിൽ പിന്നാക്കക്കാരായി കാണാറുണ്ട്. ഒന്ന് മതത്തിൻ്റെ കാര്യമാണെങ്കിൽ മറ്റത് ആത്മീയതയുടെ കാര്യമാണ്. ഒന്ന് ശരീരമാണെങ്കിൽ മറ്റത് ആത്മാവാണ്.

When I was young, when I joined the Religious community one of the first things that I realized was that not all members were similar and not all were equally zealous. I soon realized that this was natural. At that time, most of the members lived in real simplicity and frugality. Some of the members were exceptionally “poverty-spirited”. All of them wore the religious habit almost all the time. They had nothing in their rooms except for two habits, two pairs of innerwear, a towel, an umbrella, and a little crucifix! I had such respect and admiration for all of them who lived so austerely and simply.
It was only after a couple of years that I noticed another detail. Not all of the above-mentioned zealos brothers were of the same attitude. That too was just natural.
Having compassion, care and love for everyone, especially the poor, is the essence of the vow of poverty in Christian Religious life. I noticed that some of the above-mentioned brothers, while personally living really poor and simple lives, were very benevolent towards the poor. However, some others were very compassionate towards the common people and the poor. For this reason, at least some times I have seen them become the object of the displeasure of some of the members of the community, and yet they kept their compassionate heart intact. I would call them saintly beings.
Similar patterns can also be found in the Church-body. Many who strictly adhere to the traditions and practices of the church may be seen not so deep in matters of love, compassion, etc.
One is about religion, the other is about spirituality. One is about the body, the other is about the spirit.
